Work and play
Avi’s portfolio is not only nice to look at, but also rather funny:
BettingCorp is a leading player in the gaming market and it asked me to develop a corporate image for them that would reflect the fact that they are a respectable company. No flowery shirts covering gold chains and hairy chests with cousins called Vinny and Ralphie.
Big relief as initially I had nightmares about producing gaudy red, green and gold casino motifs for them. Thankfully they have some in-house talent that is rather good at that sort of stuff.
In other words the portfolio project was hijacked bij the MIS and MarCom suits who morphed it into a mindless ‘Intranet’ project they could relate to. Unfortunately, Oracle Portal is a classic example of a Supposedly-can-do-everything system put together by Enterprise programmers. It’s big, bloated, incompatible with itself and over-documented. […]
Finally, after the regents of the college discovered how badly the project was doing, the project was pulled and the Project Manager was promoted into oblivion. Unfortunately, none of the MIS and MarCom suits were publicly executed.
A lot of insight into the design process is provided in multi-paged stories on his SGI IRIX Desktop Revamp and MediaMatic website redesign.
IMHO his best work is in print design like this book cover and the Orange Juice magazine.
